Award Winners at the Dalgety Bay Flower Show

At Dalgety Bay Care Home, we pride ourselves on providing a nurturing and supportive environment that empowers our residents to thrive. Recently, a fantastic opportunity arose that brought out the best in our residents and strengthened our sense of community: participating in a local creative competition. Every year, Dalgety Bay Horticultural Society hosts its show. The show has a competition to enter with different categories for flowers, fruit, and vegetables, including one for Residential and Care Homes.

We gathered flowers from staff and from the home gardens to dry over time and used these to create a beautiful dried flower arrangement. Our residents also spent some of their activity time creating a welcome picture using pressed flowers.

Enjoying the Creative Challenge

When the opportunity to take part in the competition arose, the residents and staff were excited to take on the challenge. Preparing for the show became a wonderful way for everyone to come together, working as a group to create something special. 

For many of the residents, the idea of working on an artistic project initially felt daunting. Some believed they weren't 'creative' or that they wouldn’t be able to contribute much. However, what unfolded was a beautiful reminder that we all have a creative bone!

Making arrangements and crafting the group’s picture was filled with laughter, and conversation, and each person, regardless of their initial reservations, had something to offer. We were so pleased to see that our combined efforts were producing something so lovely. We also had two beautiful plants to enter into the competition, as one of our Laundry Ladies looks after all the plants in our Home. Nothing went to waste either, the residents used the remaining dried lavender in another activity to make scented bags for their bedrooms.

Winning the competition was the icing on the cake!

Preparing for the show was a great way to bring the residents together, working as a group to make the arrangements and picture. There was also a great deal of pride and satisfaction when we won. On the day of the show our entries were awarded 3 first places and a second place! As we had the most points in the Care Home category we were also awarded a trophy which will be engraved for us to keep until next year.

Some of the residents felt they weren’t creative and wouldn’t be any good at the activity, working together showed them what they could achieve and they were amazed at how well we did in the competition. The staff's participation in the activity not only helped to reinforce the strong bonds between the residents and caregivers, creating a family-like atmosphere within our lovely home.
